In the lithium-ion secondary battery, which was put on the market in 1990, the difficulty of the Li+/Li electrode was avoided by use of a carbon negative electrode (Cy), which works as a host for Li+ ions by intercalation. The active material for the positive electrode is typically LiCoO2, which is layer-structured and also works as a host for Li+ ions. The electrolyte solutions are nearly the same as those used in the primary lithium batteries. A schematic diagram of a lithium-ion battery is shown in Fig. 12.2. The cell reaction is as follows: LiCoO2 + Cy

for s < min{ 1 , 2 , 3 }. The data consist of two cohorts. The rst cohort, which we will refer to as the San Francisco cohort, consists of 513 homosexual and bisexual men from the San Francisco area who were HIV seropositive. Data for this cohort were collected from 1978 to 1980 with an average follow-up of 7 to 8 years. The second cohort, referred to as the transfusion cohort, received HIV-infected blood products via transfusion. This is the transfusion data that we discussed in Examples 2.10, 4.2, 4.3, 4.4, and 5.8. The follow-up for people in the transfusion cohort was only on average 3.3 years, so these data can only be used for the estimation of waiting times in early states of infection: namely, terms involving state 1. The combined data are what formulate the San Francisco AIDS study. Left, right, and interval censoring are all present in the data. Left censoring occurs for people who at the time of the rst observation may have already been in their present state for an unspeci ed amount of time. Right censoring is present for people who at the time of the last observation may still be in one of the infected states. This includes persons lost to follow-up during the study or those who are censored due to the end of the study. Interval censoring occurs for persons who

theories used to help individuals and couples make sense of their lived experiences, people relied on the knowledge, customs, practices, and beliefs of their local culture. Folk psychology focused on how people negotiated their lives and actions according to their intentions. White (1995) has exemplified how inquiry that connects people s everyday actions to their intentional states also creates movement in their own preferred directions. By maintaining clients in the subject position, they have the power to actively negotiate and mediate their own lives. Informed by Bateson s theory of restraint and negative explanation, White (1986) postulates that couples stand in one place, not because they don t want to stand in a preferable place, but because they are restrained from doing so. By subscribing to the social constructionist view that multiple realities exist simultaneously, narrative therapists believe that as the social (and dialogic) landscapes shift, alternative understandings, perceptions, and ways of relating become possible. The following sections aim to demonstrate how narrative conversations create bridges to alternative stories that support couples preferences for whom they want to become.
